White Rings vs. Dark Stains
White rings mean the moisture is trapped in the finish. Dark stains mean the water has penetrated the finish and reached the wood.
Fixing White Rings
- Hairdryer: Use a hairdryer on low heat, moving it back and forth over the stain. The heat evaporates the moisture.
- Mayonnaise: Apply a dab of mayonnaise to the ring and let it sit for a few hours (or overnight). The oil displaces the moisture. Wipe clean.
- Iron: Place a clean, dry cloth over the stain. Run a warm iron (no steam) over the cloth for a few seconds. Check frequently.
Fixing Dark Stains
Dark stains are harder to remove and usually require refinishing. You may need to sand the area and bleach the wood with oxalic acid before restaining and refinishing.
