Eliminating Pet Odors from Carpets

Love your pets, but not the smell? Here's how to fix it.

Why Pet Odors Linger

Pet urine contains uric acid crystals that don't break down with standard cleaning. When humidity rises, these crystals reactivate, bringing back the smell. To truly remove the odor, you need to break down these crystals.

The Enzymatic Solution

Enzymatic cleaners are your best friend. They contain bacteria that eat the uric acid crystals, eliminating the source of the smell rather than just masking it.

  1. Soak up as much liquid as possible.
  2. Saturate the area with the enzymatic cleaner. It needs to reach as deep as the urine did (pad and subfloor).
  3. Let it sit for the recommended time (often 10-15 minutes).
  4. Blot up the excess and let it air dry naturally.

Baking Soda Trick

For general pet smells, sprinkle baking soda liberally over the carpet. Let it sit for several hours or overnight to absorb odors, then vacuum thoroughly.
