Understanding Your Floors
Hardwood floors add beauty and value to your home, but they require specific care. The finish on your floor determines how you should clean it. Most modern floors are surface-sealed with urethane, polyurethane, or polyacrylic.
Daily Maintenance
Dust and dirt act like sandpaper, scratching the finish over time. Sweep or vacuum (using the hard floor setting to turn off the beater bar) regularly to remove grit.
Mopping Do's and Don'ts
- DO use a damp (not wet) microfiber mop.
- DO use a pH-neutral cleaner specifically made for wood floors.
- DON'T use steam mops, which can force moisture into the wood and cause warping.
- DON'T use vinegar, ammonia, or harsh chemicals that can dull the finish.
Dealing with Scuffs
For heel marks, rub lightly with a fine steel wool pad and floor wax. Wipe clean with a soft cloth.
